Root Canal

Everything You Need to Know About Root Canals
What is a Root Canal Procedure?
A root canal procedure, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental treatment that aims to remove infected or inflamed dental pulp from the root canal of a tooth. The root canal is a space inside the tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, collectively known as the pulp. The pulp can become infected or inflamed due to several reasons, including tooth decay, trauma, or gum disease.
Root canals save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted. The Procedure removes the infected or inflamed pulp, cleans and shapes the root canals, and fills them with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. The tooth is then restored with a filling or a dental crown to protect it and restore its strength and function.
Why is a Root Canal Procedure Necessary?
A root canal procedure is necessary when the dental pulp inside a tooth becomes infected or inflamed, leading to severe pain, sensitivity, swelling, and other symptoms. Leaving the condition untreated can lead to more serious oral and overall health problems, such as:
- Spread of infection: The infection can spread from the tooth to the surrounding tissues, bone, and bloodstream, causing abscesses, cellulitis, sepsis, and other life-threatening conditions.
- Loss of the tooth: If the infection and inflammation continue unchecked, they can weaken the tooth to the point where it cannot be saved and must be extracted.
- Chronic pain and discomfort: Even if the tooth does not eventually need to be extracted, a persistent infection or inflammation can cause chronic pain, discomfort, and difficulty eating, speaking, and performing daily activities.
A root canal procedure not only alleviates these symptoms and prevents further complications but also restores the tooth to its natural function and appearance. Although some people may be fearful of root canals, modern techniques and anesthesia make the procedure relatively painless and safe.
What to Expect Before, During, and After a Root Canal Procedure
Before the root canal procedure, Dr [dentist name] will perform a comprehensive dental exam, including a visual inspection, X-rays, and other diagnostic tests. This will determine the extent of the infection or inflammation, the location of the affected tooth, and the condition of the surrounding tissues. We’ll explain the procedure, answer any questions or concerns, and discuss anesthesia options.
During the root canal procedure, Dr [dentist name] will numb the affected tooth and surrounding area with a local anesthetic. She’ll will then create a small access hole in the top of the tooth to reach the pulp chamber and root canals. Using small instruments, she’ll will remove the pulp, clean and shape the root canals, and seal them with gutta-percha. Depending on the extent of the infection or inflammation, the procedure may take one or more appointments to complete.
After the root canal procedure, we may prescribe pain medication or recommend over-the-counter pain relievers to manage any discomfort or swelling.
You should avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it is fully restored with a filling or a crown, usually within a few weeks. You should also continue to practice good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and scheduling regular dental checkups and cleanings.
In most cases, a root canal procedure is effective in saving a tooth and restoring its function and appearance. However, some people may experience complications, such as:
- Discomfort: Some discomfort, sensitivity, or swelling is normal in the days after the procedure, but it should gradually subside. If it persists or worsens, contact us.
- Infection: In rare cases, the infection or inflammation may persist or recur, requiring additional treatment such as root canal retreatment or apicoectomy (removal of the tip of the root).
- Fracture: A tooth that has undergone a root canal procedure may become more brittle and prone to fracture, especially if it is not restored with a crown for support.
